Havrlant Art Collection is a private collection of contemporary Czech and Slovak art. It was founded in 2015 by Kateřina and Jakub Havrlant. The collection currently contains over one hundred and thirty works of art, paintings, sculptures, installations and photographs. The collection is presented through the website, which informs interested parties about the works and artists represented in a broader context. During the Prague Art Week festival, a selection of the collection will be on display for the first time as part of a collective exhibition, which, like the collection, will focus on the presentation of contemporary art from Central and Eastern Europe.

The collection is currently represented by 37 artists and contains a total of 150 works of art. The curator of the collection is Ján Gajdušek.

The dynamics and variability that are typical for the times we live in are reflected in the new curatorial concept. What our entire society has in common is lifelong questioning of our existence. The newly restored curtain of the Turnov theater thus creates for us an imaginary backdrop for the game of life, in front of which individual human destinies take place. It is often irony, which is so characteristic for art, that facilitates our lightness of being and helps us to overcome our personal and societal life challenges. The exhibition highlights artists from the 20th century all the way to the present, including postmodernism, post-conceptual art and current trends in fine arts. That is, an archival turn, a new perception of information frameworks and a level of uncertainty when using new technologies. The exhibition also represents traditional aspects of inspiration originating from mysticism , from the allegory of everyday life balancing between seriousness and ridiculousness and from mythology and Czech folk tradition. The exhibited art media include both classical media – painting, drawing and sculpture – and intermedial forms such as objects, installations and new media.

The emphasis on a figure as part of the exhibition concept is understood as the symbolism of an individual in society who is accentuated as an actor or actress, whose stage is the world itself. The story bearer is a figure that accompanies us through the exhibition both in real and abstract form, and the movement of the viewer at the exhibition completes the very story of the curatorial concept. The exhibition presents both Czech and foreign artists. It is also conceived as an experimental medium, where we expect a certain alteration of exhibited artists and the expansion of the curatorial intention into the accompanying program.

The exhibition is carried out under the patronage of Minister for European Affairs, Associate Professor Mikuláš Bek, Ph.D.

The exhibition presents the integration of art in the public space since the late 1960s. At that time, art left galleries and museums worldwide, and started creating new visual and social connections in the broader context of landscape and urban planning, within the discussion on the quality of public space in urban agglomerations. This project maps the “Czech situation” from the normalization era that started in the late 1960s till the present post-industrial capitalism of the “post-truth” era. It’s based on the exhibition “Public Space CZ”, prepared by Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in collaboration with the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Science, curated by Professor Petr Kratochvíl in 2017. The development on the Czech territory has reflected the global transformation of art or visual culture, responding to new geopolitical or social connections and also to the economic materialization enabled by private investments.

The common exhibition of Alžběta Říhová and Petr Dub is not a confrontation, but rather a symbiosis, a parallel public presentation of two similarly artistically oriented authors. Alžběta and Petr belong to the distinctive representatives of post-conceptual art, or “reductive tendencies”, but transformed postmodern lessons that resuscitated spectacular visuality. For both authors, the starting point is a hanging picture. The source for formal and semantic play is architecture, respectively its tectonic elements, but also deconstructed elements of the archetyped image or physical properties of the material. Both experiment with multiplication, seriality, variability, modularity. They equally emphasize the material and the careful surface treatment of the exhibited artifact, often working with illusory effects. The result is a simplified geometric form in the form of hybrid images-objects offering a surprisingly rich source of meanings, signatures, quotations and references to the history of art, architecture, society.

The SIGNAL II exhibition, prepared by the Telegraph Gallery in Olomouc, is a second presentation of contemporary art from Robert Runták’s collection and includes photographs loaned by Ondřej Přibyl. SIGNAL I was conceived by curators Martin Drábek and David Vojtuš as a probe into the brain of a passionate art collector. SIGNAL II, prepared by curator Pavel Dvořák, presents artworks whose leitmotif is the loss of the physical experience of art, as embodied in the metaphor of disappearance. The exhibition will open at the Telegraph Gallery on Thursday, 22 July, at 6 PM and will run until 12 September 2021.

We’re disappearing from the world. We’re losing our bodies and abandoning our senses. We observe ourselves from somewhere high and far away through theories, models, networks, maps, screens, projectors, camera systems, and virtual reality. We have ceased to be part of the experienced world as its subject. We have become one of its objects, a thing that can be examined, dissected, defined, and analyzed. This is how curator PD described the leitmotif of the exhibition.

The exhibition presents more than thirty works of art by twenty-three contemporary artists from Robert Runták’s collection, including paintings and sculptures. The exhibition also includes two photographs by Ondřej Přibyl, which are not part of the private collection but were lent by the artist himself.

The loss of the physical experience of an artwork, materialized in the metaphor of disappearance, is represented in the artworks on both spiritual and physical levels. In some works, it is tangible and apparent at first sight; in others, the visitors have to take their time. We complain that art is difficult to understand, that it has become elite, complex, detached from everyday problems, perhaps even incomprehensible. And instead of perceiving it, standing in front of it front of it in ecstasy, becoming part of it, and entering into a conversation with it, we scan and analyze it, sort it, copy it, share it, and show it off. The more we talk about art, the less we communicate with it, explained the curator, adding that the only solution is to meet art face to face by visiting galleries.

Sentences after Conceptual Art represent a bridge between the language of knowledge and the doctrines of knowledge. The original Sol Lewitt’s Paragraphs on Conceptual Art, first published in 1969, became an iconic text for the modernist understanding of art. A text as figurative as it is confused with a comprehensive and, above all, rationalist instruction on how to understand and interpret conceptual art. In addition to professional agreements, the original text also works with the concepts of irrationality, subjectivity and mysticism. It is radical in itself, while its legacy has become extreme. Owing to Sol Lewitt’s Theorems, the conceptual turn is frequently interpreted as the birth of a new faith and the destruction of former art at the same time.

More than ever before in history, we live today in a time of rapidly born – and soon disappearing images. As a response, it is suggested that terabytes of digital cluttered data, the hypnotic grain of television screens, and the never-ending stream of hypertrophied images of social networks are faced with faith. Not necessarily all parables of the Bible, the religious struggle for the interpretation of the world or the confession of good and evil, but simply the confidence in the function of a text capable of creating a comprehensiveness and coherence of thought. The faith in a system in which a word contains meanings that can be read, understood, interpreted, and shared. The intervention in the Church of Priest Ambrose demonstrates part of this struggle. It is invasive but temporary. It parasitizes on the architecture and function of the church, yet providing its space with a new service beyond the physical place. Sentences after Conceptual Arttest our attention, our ability to withstand the power of the image, and our willingness to believe in the meaning of artistic illusion.

In 2020, the fourth year of the Festival m3/Art in Space will take place. It builds on the three previous years: 2017 to 2019, each of which had different venues, themes and curators. The annual radical transformation of the festival prevents its artistic stagnation and always offers spectators new approaches to and perspectives on art and public space.

This year’s festival seeks to look at art in public space as a complex phenomenon linked to broader historical, political and artistic contexts. That is why we decided not only to approach a number of contemporary artists but also to include in the festival works already existing in the given locality and to explore deeper “historical layers” and their potential symbiosis with the newly placed works, many of which make this historicity their theme.

Petr Dub: The Emotion of the Frame in the Hierarchy of the Future

The study The Emotion of the Frame in the Hierarchy of the Future came about based on a dissertation titled Vybrané postkonceptuální přístupy v současné české malbě [Select Post-Conceptual Approaches in Contemporary Czech Paint- ing] (FaVU VUT in Brno, 2013) and a conference presentation, Milník diváka [Spectator Milestone] (Souvislá vrstva, UMPRUM, 2018). It is the author’s com- mentary on Czech painting’s contemporary ideological anchoring, demon- strated using the clash of two artistic manifestos: Manifest radikálního realismu written by the group Radikální realisté, and BHG manifest 1.0 from the Black Hole Generation. It outlines the conflict between painting’s ideological back- ground and various types of formalism, anachronism and the distinctive pres- entation of contemporary painting. The text is based on the conviction that, as was once true of painting, the term image – in a multi-medial, inter-medial and trans-medial meaning – is undergoing its own symbolic demise. The imag- es of course are still physically existent, it is merely the centres of ideological power that are changing, the media channels and the attendant interpretation. Post-conceptual art – which paradoxically helped subdue the linear certainty of the art historical context – has definitely overcome the hegemony of the classical canon of art, built on the Cultivation of art talent. Today, painting is experiencing another of its iterative deaths and its own renaissance all at once. It finds itself in the situation of a traditional medium with a clearly defined historical apparatus, similar to the position of a medium allowed all manner of possible diversities and juxtaposition. The physicality of painting as one of the factors determining authenticity of message, and virtuality as an agent of authenticity, may seem mutually exclusive. The shift of painting from gallery space to the interface of virtual networks is an evident departure, from the principle of art’s museum existence to the internet’s presentational environ- ment based on a divergent typology of narration. Artistic stories and story-tell- ing, so essential for the shared creation of an art work’s meaning, are utilizing social networks afresh, with all the attendant limitations as well as benefits.

The “white cube” crisis has chased painters in a variety of directions. While the radical realists are making a retrograde flight to the plein air, past the facto- ry entrance to socialist still life painting, the Black Hole Generation has open- ly charged toward the lifestyle of Generation 0 and Generation Z. In neither case do we observe the absence of the image, rather it is cloaked in the guise of a community’s language. The demand circulating for strengthening the political language of painting has almost without exception made use of the beliefs and visual codes of opinions in one’s own group. The new, digital situation of paint- ing opens new communication possibilities and sublimates into a trend creating new hierarchies of art evaluation. The image has frozen in its own acceleration. Never has teaching art been so complicated. The crisis of the self-identification of art as a valid field of knowledge in society is fading on the threshold of the 21st century, in the maelstrom of global political arts, feministic discourse, and the vision of the coming ecological apocalypse. Will the images of the future be technocratic, democratic or “artistic”? Can art succeed in a world reduced to hy- pertrophied social media snapshots? Will reality fade, or the reality of art? Is the answer in art criticism of quality, or political criticism of art?

Intervence Petra Duba pro expozici Meziprůzkumy / Sbírka AJG 1300–2018 bude situována v místě vstupu do galerie a vychází z její historie. Umělcův zásah reaguje na institucionální a společenský status Alšovy jihočeské galerie na pozadí současné geopolitické situace v Evropě. Intervence spočívá ve dvou oddělených performancích, které proběhnou v rámci otevření nové podoby expozice dne 17. března 2018 a jedné doprovodné akce (komentovaná prohlídka atp.). Autorovy drobné zásahy v podobě reinterpretace stávajícího „institucionálního obalu“ galerie se pak na několik měsíců stanou nenápadnou součástí jejího exteriéru. Návštěvníka tak bude již při vstupu upozorňovat na jednu z hlavních myšlenek pravidelně obměňované stálé expozice, jejíž autoři se snaží prezentovat to nejlepší ze sbírek galerie, ale vždy se zřetelem na její institucionální dějiny.

The exhibition “Into the Dichotomy of an Image” follows up on Petr Dub’s projects from the past two years, in which he copes with the image media as an artistic object primarily presented on various social backgrounds. Dub’s interpretation of the notion of “dichotomy” can be perceived as the identification of a unit in a collective whole, or, on the contrary, as an autonomous experiment of assembling a group of symbols to create new contents. In his installation arrangement planned for the Jelení Gallery, he treats the relationships between motives of interior elements, which we commonly surround ourselves with in our home environment and the awareness connected with their broader political interpretation.

The exhibition of Petr Dub ends a project “The artist as a traveler.” This theme is a direct continuation of topics discussed in two previous years as a part of series “The artist as anthropologist.” Presenting the series of activities in which artists approached the anthropologists, it was hard to ignore the fact that a large part of the projects was implemented during the journey. Contemporary artists are constantly traveling, seeking inspiration in private expeditions, as well as participating in residential programs.

Petr Dub realizes the exhibition “Anthropologist Translated” within the framework of residency programme of the Torun Cultural Agenda. The work includes the dimension of travel on more metaphorical plane. It’s about the journey of meanings. One of the walls of the gallery is covered with the David Harvey’s essay “Right to the City”, translated into Polish by Google Translator. In this way, the artist emphasizes the ability to interpret the rebellious message in the context of local issues. Migration of the text between languages ​​and regions reflects the journey of the global crisis, which causes unpredictable results in different places of the globe. Guests of the exhibition will be able to correct and comment the text, using the tools developed by the artist. They will make the text consistent with the rules of Polish language, but they can also make impact on the content of the essay.

A Colony of Freedom
(Possibilities of the New National Style)

The “Kolonie Svobody – Colony of Freedom” project is related to the urbanistic development of the Vinohrady neighborhood of Prague, especially around the area of the buildings of that name that were constructed in the national style of the first half of the 1920s in Na Šafránce Street near where Dub himself now lives. It is also related to the nearby Vlasta housing estate in the neighborhood of Vršovice, which was created during the 1970s especially for the inhabitants of the village of Milovice. Those people were moved out of their homes in order for the Soviet Army to be accommodated in that village. Dub naturally perceives the gradual transformation of these places over time and the later, very often insensitive interventions into the original constructions – for example, what is at first glance an apparently new concept of a façade, or the unobtrustive deformation of a Rondo-Cubist element. “Both sites are just a couple of hundred meters away from each other, but they represent two diametrically different architectonic periods and to walk from Korunní Street towards Moskevská Street is like traveling through time. As one orbits, meter by meter, down the hill, what changes, meter by meter, in a fascinating way, is not just the architectonic tone of the city, but primarily the social segment of its inhabitants. Up on the hill the buildings are predominantly beige-colored, sandy brown or dark red. Kazažšská, Tádžická, Magnitorská Streets and their environs correspond to an apricot-strawberry mood that is attempting to ‘originally’ distinguish itself from the surrounding buildings. The beginning of an ideological battle over living space is notionally staked out by Gočár’s Church of St. Václav, dressed in white. It is as if faith in a simple, white ideal connects both irreconcilable camps,” Dub describes his impressions.

Dub previously investigated the devaluation of historical buildings in his above-mentioned project for the Nika Gallery. For that project, what served as a prototype was the insulation of a dysfunctional Functionalist building on Kotlářská Street in the center of Brno. His exhibition “In-sue-lie” at Galerie 207 responded to the neglected state of the local gallery walls and to housing for the lower class; in addition to videos, he presented the Czech flag in the colors of pink, pistachio, and a creamy yellow, i.e., the shades that also show up in the “Kolonie Svobody – Colony of Freedom” installation.

Dub is researching both of these different architectonic phenomena as psychosocial phenomena reflecting certain needs of a given historical period. His installation for Kvalitář comes out of his observations and reflections on the insensitive use of color in architecture. Dub works with the samples of a particular paint company and intuitively applies the chosen shades to the surface of the actual architectural volume and spatial configuration of the gallery halls. “The intention of the installation reflects the dialogue between architectonic surfaces in these dominant color tones, whether connected with a specific architectonic style, form, or various historical eras of architecture. The gallery is therefore painted in a combination of façade colors and signs demonstrating the transition among various ways of handling color in architecture. Where, basically, does individual freedom end and collective responsibility for the public space begin? What will be the color of the Czech future?” Dub exaggeratedly asks when describing the project overall. The coats of paint follow locally specific elements, including the alcoves and the vaulted roof. Empty parts of the walls become equal elements of the resulting “painting”. The emphasis is on integrality even as the interior becomes a painted composition.

Colors utilized on and within architecture automatically incite emotion, create an atmosphere. They are unavoidable, impressive, even if we perceive structures as colorless. Every epoch in the dynamic evolution of style the architecture of the 20th century had undergone showed a different relation to the color schemes of buildings and their significance. Uncertainty of Artist´s life? by Blahoslav Rozboril (Masaryk University Brno) & Jana Pisarikova (Moravian Gallery Brno)

The paper focuses on fine art producers, their subjective experience of their existential situation and the strategies used to solve it. The text is based on empirical material – a survey in a written form, in which Czech artists born in 1970s and 80s who entered the art scene after the year 2000 are being interviewed (Vasil Artamanov, Matej Al-Ali, Veronika Bromová, Petr Dub, Pavel Sterec, Jana Doležalová, Pavla Malinová, Oldřich Morys, Katarina Hladekova, Tomáš Hodboď, Vendula Chalánková, Eva Jiřička, Lukáš Karbus, Lenka Klodová, Roman Štětina and Martin Zet). The respondents answered a set of 20 questions via email. The paper puts the research in a diachronic context by comparing it with a similar survey carried out in the 1930s (On the Social Position of Czechoslovak Writer. A Survey by the U-blok magazine). The comparison suggests that the changes between the two periods in focus only apply to several parametres entering the situation. However, most elements of the living situation of an art producer seem to be constant. Similar practices and strategies in the solving of various situations have been repeated over decades, even though art producers perceive everydayness as the challenge to employ their creativity. The most frequent (and researched with a priority focus) solution of an artist securing their living is by working in an educational institution. Many authors nevertheless perceive their pedagogical activities as a mission extending their attention to the external world into another dimension of their authorial undetakings. Part of the respondents see the lack of security in their lives as an ambivalent element interconnecting freedom with a voluntary acceptance of limitations. It seems artists are better equipped for the confrontation with social unequality or economic crisis thanks to their accepted uncertainty. However, they see some aspects of their situation as a privilege

Viktor Valášek graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He studied in Painting Studio of Vladimír Skrepl, Painting Studio of Zdeněk Beran and Printmaking Studio of Jiří Lindovský. He has also been on study visits to Porto, New York, and a one-semester educational stay in Intermedia Confrontation Studio of Jiří David. His production is typified by exploration of socio-political themes using classic art techniques, painting and drawing. For a long time he devoted himself to painting prominent mountains, dominant landscapes that can be viewed in a wider political context as symbols of this or that ideology. A mountain as a symbol of opinions, truths and lies was depicted by the artist as a central composition on a green background (greenscreen). An important role was played here by his commitment to the process of creation because the painting of a mountain was usually preceded by its physical ascent. The principle of vanquishing, getting to know local customs and then artistic rendition is significant for the work of Viktor Valášek. The process of seeking inspiration, getting to know a milieu and establishing new human relations is as valuable as the work in which everything is merged.

In the project for Altán Klamovka Viktor Valášek reflects on its recent exhibition history that focused on the drawing medium. He asked the preceding exhibitors to donate to him a drawing which need not have been linked to a specific exhibition at Altán Klamovka. The selection criterion was that those artists had exhibited here. Viktor Valášek then redrew the drawings and recycled them to produce a new work of art. The artist’s contribution does not lie merely in the postproduction of the works but above all, in the process of creation, which is visiting selected artists’ studios and fostering the relations on the local art scene. The artist used a similar painting project in New York or Dakar, where it was largely a question of entering the art scenes.

I do, soft toys from Billa, but I need to stop doing that. They had a promotion where I picked the first one, and since then I want to have one from every promotion.

The closing ceremonious of project Statue to Pilsen

“Art, or any cultural event, is inevitably a part of what we call political or social development. The fact that Pilsen has won the European Capital of Culture title for this year is a proof that the city wants to play a more prominent role, not just in the Czech Republic but within Europe, too. An official statement of this kind is, however, no guarantee that the desired plan will actually be accomplished. Matěj Al Ali, Petr Dub and Tomáš Moravec will create a Statue for Pilsen which they will take to one of the European twin cities before they unveil the sculpture to Pilsen citizens, as a message that a European-scale event is happening in Pilsen. After several months of this “diplomatic stimulation” in one of the twin cities, the artefact will be returned back to Pilsen and local citizens will be able to decide where should the Statue to Pilsen be installed.”

the current exhibition in the kvalitář gallery thematises one of the fundamental, while not frequently mentioned, exhibition principles. its author milan salák responds to the relationship of the professional public to group exhibitions and shows. within the installation of the exhibition, the expected presentation of an artefact is reduced to introducing the author’s name. the selection of “participating” artists corresponds to the standard way in which curators approach similar shows. well-established brands are complemented with less common names as the exhibition’s author finds it appropriate in terms of the concept or otherwise. the selection meets the predictable requirements of a representative show. missing are only those to whom the curator did not give a phone call. a largely unexpected refusal to “participate in the exhibition” was not accepted from anyone. and yet, those who are not at the exhibition still represent an overwhelming majority. all the refreshment prepared for the exhibition opening will be consumed to celebrate the exhibiting elite. but surely, not everyone who will be thirsty that evening will be satisfied. nevertheless, one may assume that it will not at all affect the way in which the exhibition will be accepted.

Petr Dub is a (post) conceptual artist. He systematically examines the medium of hanging painting, or rather the current position of painting. Dub’s paintings are indeed indisputable results of manual, and let us add, often very challenging and sophisticated activity, yet the used verb “examine” is not a meaningless synonym for “painting” in his artistic practice. It primarily refers to the conscious mental activity that precedes the actual process of painting. Petr Dub is also the author of one of the few, if not the only Czech written theoretical study, which reflects the local post-conceptual painting in the context of the current discourse of art. The book, published under the title Selected Post-conceptual Approaches in the Contemporary Czech Painting, was the output of his PhD. studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno. Studying in Petr Kvíčala and Milan Houser‘s studio in Brno as well as a one-year internship at the Prague Academy of Arts Architecture & Design of Jiří David and Milan Salák were not in Dub’s case only a formal fulfilling of duties. Petr Dub managed, in confrontation with outstanding, but artistically and humanly different personalities, distill for himself a personal lesson, which forms a compact foundation of his current artistic trajectory. In gastronomy, which was actually the artist’s first career choice, it would be an analogy to the format of “fusion cuisine” combining the strong background of Brno conceptualism and the heritage of Prague postmodernism.
 
The title of the exhibition, A Survivor’s Diary, offers as one of the ways to read it, a commentary on the current situation. Post-apocalyptic jargon is, since than, a mandatory part of the rhetorical arsenal used to reflect the current status of painting. For Petr Dub, who exists on the tectonic breaking point of two irreconcilable worlds, similar references make flirtatious game. He winks to both sides, but he has already decided to remain single. He acts similarly in his artistic practice. He does not leave the field of traditional hanging painting on purpose. At the same time, however, he applies the strategies that in the history of at least the last fifty years, gradually led to its questioning and rejection. Sci-fi literature works with the possibility of time travel, the intervention in history could change, or rather reverse the present danger. Petr Dub does not seek a revision of history. He knows too much for that. It seems that he rather tries to use the potential that remained fallow in the past on the altar of rapid, avantgarde method. Hybrid status, when an art work contains also the genetic code of its own end and (re) birth represents for us, the survivors, one of the relevant reasons to continue to seriously deal with art.

Petr Dub is a (post) conceptual artist. He systematically examines the medium of hanging painting, or rather the current position of painting. Dub’s paintings are indeed indisputable results of manual, and let us add, often very challenging and sophisticated activity, yet the used verb “examine” is not a meaningless synonym for “painting” in his artistic practice. It primarily refers to the conscious mental activity that precedes the actual process of painting. Petr Dub is also the author of one of the few, if not the only Czech written theoretical study, which reflects the local post-conceptual painting in the context of the current discourse of art. The book, published under the title Selected Post-conceptual Approaches in the Contemporary Czech Painting, was the output of his PhD. studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Brno. Studying in Petr Kvíčala and Milan Houser‘s studio in Brno as well as a one-year internship at the Prague Academy of Arts Architecture & Design of Jiří David and Milan Salák were not in Dub’s case only a formal fulfilling of duties. Petr Dub managed, in confrontation with outstanding, but artistically and humanly different personalities, distill for himself a personal lesson, which forms a compact foundation of his current artistic trajectory. In gastronomy, which was actually the artist’s first career choice, it would be an analogy to the format of “fusion cuisine” combining the strong background of Brno conceptualism and the heritage of Prague postmodernism.

Another way how not to create paintings

Artworks created by Petr Dub (1976) in the past few years take a form of high reliefs with soft transitions, such that in combination with the color applied by spraying they resemble details of bodyworks of opalescent metallic paint or abstract computer rendering of the surface of a planet. However, their basis remains in a canvas and they are also hung on a wall, like paintings. Otherwise, they differ greatly from what most people imagine when hearing the word “painting”, which may include many variations (i.e. styles, contents, techniques, materials, etc.), yet the common denominator is its spatial definition, or special limitations. A sheet-like shape of regular, mostly rectangular format, until recently represented the universal basis within which the story of art history had been written in paint. Petr Dub´s artwork supports the famous thesis of the theorist of abstract expressionism Clement Greenberg (while at the same time he is in conflict with him) which states that each medium is directed toward the development of its awareness of itself and its innermost resources, which for Greenberg was the journey from illusion and literary contents to universal non-representative painting, whose content and purpose lies in the painting itself. Dub´s images/objects add to that one of the ways in which to continue the story and lies in the fact that the media at some breaking point turn against each other, begin to mutate, or interfere, and push their own boundaries. As the exhibition title illustrates, this is the theme of Dub’s work.

When we look back at what has preceded these elements in his work before, we find that he consistently addresses some issues and that the tension between the artwork and its deconstruction or disputation plays a principal role for him. Already during his studies he was intrigued by abstract image, especially by monochrome, and specifically by painting problems, such as work with gestic style. If his later works are formally very impressive and visually appealing, the former could be an example of “bad painting” in the category of abstract painting; he called them Antipaintings. It seems that the author had tested the possibilities of abstract painting while looking for a theme, which eventually and paradoxically became the testing itself.

This is also illustrated by the next cycle Unframed that has, for the first time, drawn the attention of the expert public. “Unframed” – i.e. “frameless” – in this context means not only without a traditional frame, which modern painting has gotten rid of long before, but, furthermore, without stretching frame, a kind of primordial material skeleton of a painting. Canvases of irregular shapes were sometimes hung directly on the wall, looking like patches of color, sometimes they were also crumpled, hence creating irregular amorphous structures. From there it was not a long way off to creating works that preserve the principle of a painting as a relief image object, but the irregularities and collapse were substituted by smooth stretched shape. His works are therefore on the one hand impressive aesthetic objects, yet, on the other, the result of complicated thinking about painting as a specific entity in the art-historical context, of thinking that takes place here and now. Therefore it could be said about them that although seemingly autonomous and as if standing outside the reality of our contemporary world, they are at the same time its adequate, though perhaps subconscious, expression – if only by the emphasis on smooth, design-like surface or by the focus on subtle artistic problems emerging in times when reality is so complicated that we cease to understand it. The “Kvalitář” Gallery confirms its identity as a meeting point of contemporary art, architecture and design through the project of the trio of authors of Petr Dub, Marek Habr and Zdeněk Porcal. The exhibition’s concept represents appropriation approaches associated with a new attitude to the interpretation of Petr Dub’s long- running series entitled Reframed.

The central theme of this series consists in primarily the work or “reformatting” the medium of the classical suspension painting into an object on the borderline of a painting and object. The resulting work of art examines the current technical possibilities of the painting medium, openly reflecting the layout of the exhibition or architectural space with different social functions. In the instant case, however, searching for an optimal relationship between the arrangement of three-dimensional objects and specific installation possibilities goes beyond simple variations of different perspectives.

Petr Dub is well aware that the subsequent photographic documentation has only a limited capacity to mediate the viewer’s physical situation and becomes permanently independent as an autonomous form of the interpretation of reality. He does not perceive the moment when the photographer steps on stage as uniquely mechanical, and in this respect, he also understands the uniqueness of the activity of his colleague Zdeněk Porcal, with whom he has been cooperating on the Reframed series since 2011. Mutual cooperation has ultimately led to purely photographic outputs in which Zdeněk Porcal interprets the whole series reversely using a simple figure of reading the figure and background. He uses the wooden lath coated with his colleague’s canvas in the series of dozens of shots as a photographic aid to measure the landscape and architecture.

The (RE)FRAMED exhibition finally reunites both approaches with an architectural (non-)solution of architect Marek Habr, co-founder of the “Kvalitář” Gallery and Studio. In the final installation, Marek Habr abandons the initial idea of the specific construction presenting the original “model and picture”, leaving the gallery space seemingly empty to facilitate understanding of different realities. As presented by the trio, the dimly lit gallery turns into a trap to reality, becoming a screening room where the still moments of the real world are confronted with their immediate artistic reflection.

On two floors you can encounter 10 artistic works rendering materiality in their own special ways, having one thing in common: they are neither abstract nor concrete. United by the concerted approach to the medium itself the works are seeking to deviate from dichotomies, genres and disciplines: the exhibtion pursues to revitalizise contents – without any obvious reference. The transcendantal moment encountered throughout the works and the exhibition’s extended program exceeds towards their physicality: “Hyperobejcts have finally done what decades of avant-garde experimentation have been unable to do: they have broken forever the aesthetic frame separating the viewer from the viewed and producing the aesthetic effect of distance, which Walter Benjamin called aura.” (Timothy Morton).

The exhibited works are open up and we encounter them without any concrete horizons. Their physicality constitutes their variety, reaching a point where relations dissolve. Without ending up in a moment of no return the works avoid non-refernciality by reaching a higher form of representation far beyond our presence: looking for a zero-person perspective. We are not talking about l’art pour l’art, neither dealing with any media syncretism, but embodiments of the artists, in their work and within the spectator. Those moments of encounter and embodiment being the culmination and essential elements of the works themselves.

Panic Room is the third project of the artistic trio Al-Ali, Dub and Moravec, dealing with issues of contemporary architectural development of cities and suburban landscapes. For their exhibition at Karlín Studios, they explore the possibilities of uses of modular system from construction units, which they represent in a stereotypical agencement of technocratical lines. The created scene looks like an ongoing construction, which final shape results from social demands together with the quality of the architecture itself.

Jamais vu is a group exhibition which aims to present one of the current tendencies in art, which is based upon focusing on visual and material construction of work of art.  It’s not similar to the traditional (modernistic) analysis of medium, but it’s rather an examination of the process of creating self-governing “visual units”.

Selected artists operate with “mysterious, quasi-abstract” forms and constructions. They participate in a demiurgic creation of new visual realities, but they also make a reflexive approach to that. A possibility of unlimited visual creation does not fascinate anymore, but rather causes melancholy. Artists also analyze the process of emerging the meanings in work of art. Clearing and “test” filling the forms with half-readable significances bring out some mysterious and incomplete images/objects. 

Realities created in recent art can be perceived as “jamais vu”. This notion in psychology names a sudden feeling of oddity and unreality of view. It calls conviction about deep complexity of visual and material world and provokes questions about the importance and  the need of abstraction today.

The exhibition Open Call presents the duo of visual artists, Matěj Al-Ali (*1985) 
and Tomáš Moravec (*1985). The authors belong among the youngest representatives of „minimalist tendency“, which is the name of today´s stream of conceptualism in the Czech Republic. The mutual influence of both authors is based on sharing the partners’ know-how, but it reflects various individual approaches. Simply, it is possible to say that Al-Ali within the common work plays the role of a monumentalist and a performer, whereas Moravec is mainly a sensitive initiator and a technician of shared artistic instruments.

Open Call is inspired by globally recognizable format of institutional calls for the creation of artworks or exhibitions „custom made“ for the commissioner. The projects builds on the thematic unit of the Gallery Weltecho for 2013 sub-titled Pfadfinder, but simultaneously it points out the problematic interface of contemporary international art and partial loss of authorial freedom within the rules of artistic operation. However, the conceptual answer in this case does not lie in institutional critique or, on the contrary, reflexive self-defence in the form of benevolent loose cooperation of a curator with artists – friends.

The project limits the list of rules and regulations that condition the final form of exposed artworks. The authors are restricted in the planned installation by six key rules in total thematizing concepts as, for instance, dimension, target audience or copyright. Reduction of the creative field emphasizes the search for the content part of the whole year’s program of the Gallery Weltecho. This year´s theme of search and exploration is understood by Al-Ali and Moravec as study of the basic qualities of search. Through the revision of the relation between the measure of a human figure and the surrounding world, they undertake a playful tour in which they exchange traditional artistic disciplines for the demonstration of human capability to identify verified physical phenomena behind an abstract message.

The authors´ videos and objects are manifestations of „basic research“. The „applied“ is left exclusively to the viewers. They themselves go beyond the drill of site specific cooperation and for the first time work together on a broader cycle of works that could be transferred into various galleries. The result of this constellation is not the constant negotiation of authors with gallery situation but defragmented installation paraphrasing main principles of scouting or, better, its idealistic background. The authors test legitimacy of graphic use of iconographic concepts (watch, flag, rope, etc.) and capacity of manipulation of a viewer through optical illusion. In an effort to escape from the curators‘ dictate they test the fragile border between ideals, ideology and demagogy. They practice diplomacy whose aim is not to push one´s own interests but rather the search for something that we may call collective sharing of authenticity.

The exhibition project Poison Green explores the complexity of the environment together with conventions, stereotypes and ideologies inherent in our understanding of nature. Rather than painting green and romanticizing nature, the presented artists and concepts examine the consequences of the urban, post-industrial and virtualized reality we live in.

Taking on the role of scientists, environmentalists and social workers, the artists and participants presented in Poison Green explore the environment through a multi-layered lens of culture and nature looking for possible environmental models socially integrated into our daily lives. The exhibition Poison Green is incorporated in a series of installations and visuals that extends from the gallery of the Bohemian National Hall to its rooftop, where a community garden project entitled Dinner Garden is installed. Here participants and visitors have the opportunity to experience the process of how to grow just enough food for one dish.

The initiative Mánes umělcům (Mánes for Artists) aims at a transformation of Nadace českého výtvarného umění (Czech Visual Art Fund) which administers the exhibition hall Mánes into a transparently organized institution that can better serve the artistic community.

For this purpose the initiative has organized democratic elections of new nine members of the fund’s board who should replace the current ones and who will represent wide spectrum of artists, curators and theoreticians living in the Czech Republic. Elections will take place on May 18 from 2pm at DIVUS café. There will be also a „round table discussion“ during the vote.

new publication by petr dub: selected post-conceptual approaches in the contemporary czech painting

The book entitled Selected Post-conceptual Approaches in the Contemporary Czech Painting reflects the author’s expressions of the youngest artists’ generation working with the conceptual forms in the painting medium after 1996. The aim of the dissertation is to outline the conflict and overlapping of the conceptualism and painting. Apart from the development of conceptual art, the reference framework of the submitted thesis also comprises the post-modern turn in visual arts associated with a global change in its social status during the second half of the 20th and at the beginning of 21st century. The development of the domestic artistic scene and particular approaches are presented on the basis of a representative selection of the most distinctive tendencies and significant authors, being compared with the work of foreign artists. The text interprets the key theoretical treatises, reviewed responses and artists’ statements covering the domain of “contemporary painting to conceptual art”.

The festival of film animation deals with a wide conception of animation phenomena in the context of cinematography, media studies and visual arts. Here are the terms that rank among the key words and the leading topics: animation, archiving, audiovisual art, database, design, digital culture, experimental film, intermediality, cinematography, presentation, motion picture, remediation, video art.

The festival of film animation came into existence in 2000 and takes place in the university city of Olomouc. Since 2008, the organization team’s activities have lasted throughout the whole year. It is a unique platform in the Czech Republic within which new technologies and the traditions of film animation are functionally combined in modern art and in film production. The festival of film animation is, in the long term, open to collaboration with international film festivals, galleries and museums, archives and digital databases.

Many renowned European organizations (Forma London, Filmmuseum Vienna, Re:Voir Paris etc.) support the festival. PAF Graphical design was present at the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno (2010) and at various European book festivals. More info. at: http://www.pifpaf.cz/en/profile

Trail of courage is designed as an educational path compounded of twelve separate spots within the urban area of Psáry. Each freestanding information sign will be divided into an illustrative part (graphical scheme of selected landscape or architectural character – eg. horizon, layout, ground-plan) and a descriptive part (explaining selected terms of urban sprawl theory – eg. single-use zone, car-dependent communities, housing subdivisions). As a support tool “a smart project leaflet-map” will be distributed among local households to explain our main goals to the inhabitants and to open up the opportunity of public discussion on selected topics.

“…A situation. The situation might look like this: At the end of the game, the machine asks you: ‘Would you like to play another game?’ Play again? Or play a different game? What kind of question is that? You have to decide. And all of a sudden, you don’t know what you want. That machine is the world all around you. Its current state has been pre-programmed. It is the world into which we were born, and nobody asked us if we are at all interested in being in this world. And we have no idea whether the world is interested in us. Perhaps – quite certainly, in fact – we have all programmed its appearance and continue to predetermine it. It isn’t important to find fault; now is the time to find other ways of playing, since the entire system is a game. Be that as it may, the question is as infantile as it is vital to our future: Do you want to play another game? Or: Do we want to play the same game differently? The structure into which we are injected is a large and complicated strategy, a game without any ‘Undo’ or CTRL Z – and most importantly, no chance of playing the same game again. It is one big gamble.”

A second man in a grey coat answers: “Sure, the worldwide structure of society is one big complicated game. But it is up to us to decide what parts and what passages of the game to play. Some of them we have to play no matter what, whether we want to or not. Art and artists know that they are a part of the game. And what we are interested in right now is what stance they will take towards it all. I am convinced that unfortunately they offer no solutions that we might be able to apply in real life. They are just playing another sort of game!” (transcribed from a secret recording of top representatives of a committee of the UN’s International Ministry for Saving the Planet ISOS , 2010, in the waters of the Adriatic Sea)

The above text forms the starting point and a kind of challenge for an exhibition in a building that has experienced many very different kinds of games. Even art, with its brief intervention into the building, is just a “sort of game”, one that clearly will not save the world. It can, however, affect us emotionally and stir up the routine of our thoughts. The works that have been selected for this exhibition always in some way reflect, directly or indirectly, the concept of games, and so we may briefly feel afflicted or have a chance to observe a “monstrous installation” at a local Kunsthalle on the kitchen counter.

The shortlist was selected by this year’s judges Sir Peter Blake (artist), Tim Marlow (White Cube), Philly Adams (Saatchi Gallery), Gavin Turk (artist), Robert Punkenkhofer (Art&Idea), Joseph Backstein (Moscow Biennale) and Nasser Azam (artist).

Not only did the entries show a strong return to painting, but as Robert Punkenhofer said “The more than 350 entries clearly documented the wonderful diversity and strength of Europe?s artistic scene. The prize will certainly raise the visibility of some of the most promising painters and photographers from the continent.” The judges will decide the winner of the £25,000 first prize during the exhibition of the shortlisted works at the Barbican Centre which will be held from 9 – 20th June, 2010. The general public are also invited to cast their votes from today online at www.sovereignartfoundation.com.

The artist with the most votes will win the public vote prize of £1,000. All works, excluding the main prize winner, will be available to purchase at a gala auction dinner, offering collectors and members of the public the fantastic opportunity to buy works by these rising stars of contemporary art. Prices start from the affordable £400 to over £30,000. All proceeds will be split 50:50 between the Foundation and the artists. This year The Sovereign Art Foundation will use the funds raised to support the Barbican Centre Trust, helping them to continue their fantastic arts outreach programme in the London area. Howard Bilton, Founder and Chairman of the Sovereign Art Foundation said “We are delighted by the strength of this year’s shortlist, for this our fourth European competition. We hope the auction will raise a significant sum to support the inspiring work of the Barbican Centre Trust. We invite everyone to go to the exhibition, and to support the artists by coming to the dinner or by placing an absentee bid on their favourite works by these critically acclaimed artists.”
